Barry University, Student Union, Miami Shores, Florida

The HADP goal for the project was to design a building that could be the new symbol of Barry University, serve as the functional and inspiration centerpiece of the campus, and unite students and faculty in an exciting functional environment.

Barry University students, administration and union staff identified more than 48 categories of ongoing union programs to be considered in the new facility. Following extensive consensus building a program representing many of the historically predominant elements was established. As apart of the overall 75,000 s.f. building, the program identifies 30,000 s.f. for student organizations, student support services and student service administration office areas. Dining facilities and the food preparation area occupy an additional 15,000 s.f. of multi-purpose space that can be used for presentations, dances, and larger university events. There is a 1600 s.f. lounge for commuter students providing computer workstations and study areas. Nearly 10,000 s.f. are dedicated to student fitness, a game room, the campus pub and an events room that will support presentations, meetings and scheduled entertainment activities. Retail operations account for 9,500 s.f. of the new union and are centered in the new Barry University Bookstore.
