School Board of Broward County, Hallandale Elementary School, Hallandale, FloridaThe HADP goal for the project was to break out of the rigid rectilinear box geometry of typical elementary school design and to create a dynamic well organized scheme which responded to the functional program of the school district. HADP was commissioned to develop a Master plan and design a 112,000 s.f. new state-of-the-art Elementary School facility for the School Board of Broward County. The Design provides for 1,092 student stations distributed throughout the school campus that comprises one and two-story buildings, set in a harmonic way. A strong Main Street planning concept utilizes the central spine corridor. The project comprises modular standardized classroom elements in a defined house concept with each house plugged into the central spine corridor and facing a quiet zone. The Media Center, Administration and Dining are all centrally located off the main street and convenient to parking, drop-off and single side access from SW 4th Avenue. Following the concept of a community school provides a strong orientation as you move through the school, with a clear definition between public and student academic areas, which can be shut off at night leaving the multi-use functions open for community use. The resulting scheme provides a well organized, controlled, and flexible facility, which creates and exciting learning environment for the children and faculty. The educational program included a large shelter and playground area for their physical activities and after hours stay. In addition, the school incorporates an Enhanced Hurricane Protection Area (EHPA) in the multipurpose and dining rooms to assist the neighborhood during moments of emergency. |
