St. Johns County Public Schools, Alice B. Landrum Middle School, Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida

The HADP goal for the project was to create the image of traditional school house architecture within the overall context of a 1,000 student prototype middle school which could be designed and built on a fast-track basis.

Located near Jacksonville, Florida, the new school was programmed and designed in 5 1/2 months based on a unique prototype developed that introduced the “teaming” concept to the County. The HADP firm served as design consultant and provided Phase I and II documents to a local architect. The architectural concept involved recalling the image of the traditional “Little Red School House” which was utilized to provide for popular classroom modules that connect into a backdrop of administrative and support functions. The Landrum School was designed for 587 students and developed from the Sebastian School prototype. A few years later the school was enlarged according to plan to the design capacity of 1,030 students. The 1,030 students’ station design includes six “teaming” modules; 20,000 s.f. gym and physical education area; 85,000 s.f. media center; 11,000 s.f. food service; 500 seat auditorium/multipurpose room; and 17,500 s.f. prevocational training areas. The initial package consisting of four planned new schools were budgeted at $24 million and bid $3 million under budget. The Bid Price for all four schools at 1,030 students was $6 million under budget.
