New College of Florida, Pritzer, Searing, Peterson & Letter Halls and Renovation of I.M. Pei Dorms, Sarasota, FloridaThe HADP goal for the project was to respond to the housing needs of a unique academic institution and to respond to the challenge of a site adjacent to the award-winning dorms designed by renowned architect I. M. Pei. HADP Architecture selected by New College of Florida to provide programming and complete A/E services for the new residence halls, the renovation of the existing "Pei" Dormitories and the renovation and addition of Hamilton Student Services Center. The new residence halls will be the first construction project at New College that responds to the new master plan and will provide approximately 657 newly renovated beds (202 new/455 renovated) and various support areas such as meeting rooms, study rooms, lounges, kitchens and miscellaneous support and service areas. Four of the new residence halls are situated in a row and feature lodge-style accommodations. The fifth offers more traditional, apartment-style accommodations. Designed according to green building specifications laid out in LEED guidelines, the building features flat and gabled roofs, timbered ceilings, and floor-to-ceiling windows to take advantage of Florida’s natural environment. The project includes masterplanning the renovation of the three Pei-designed dorms and courts to a sustainable complex complete with student laundry, lounges and miscellaneous support spaces. The project also includes renovation of the Hamilton Student Center which serves as the central meeting hall and houses the new kitchen and dining services, a visitor lobby, and convenience store. |
