City of Jacksonville, Pavilion at Jacksonville Beach, Jacksonville, Florida

The HADP goal for the Pavilion at Jacksonville Beach, Florida was to design a community center that provided a gathering place for the residents of Jacksonville, bestowed an architectural icon for the city, and rejuvenated the downtown district.

The Jacksonville Beach Pavilion project was the first of four projects, within six city blocks, that was designed to revitalize the downtown district and provide a gathering spot for the community. The Pavilion construction was one of the first ever to use load bearing concrete buttresses with laminated wood beams connecting to form the pinnacle of the building’s roof. Contained within these 15 foot monumental concrete sections are large assembly areas, a basketball court, concession facilities, and service facilities. With a vertical façade one story high of glass front windows, all encompassing balconies and only one block from the ocean, the facility presents a memorable scene for the entire community. The building was used for political, religious, social and business gatherings. The building materials consisted of pre-cast concrete panels and all buildings were hurricane proof. Flanking the Pavilion was a restaurant, library, and new city hall—all of which were designed by HADP.
