The HADP goal for the project was to introduce the concept that the architecture embodied the idea of "a chance for change" as part of the belief that good design can contribute to the disadvantaged student’s sense of self-worth.
The complex is one of the largest such facilities in the U.S. The project has 140,000 g.s.f. of building area and provides facilities to accommodate high school and vocational training programs.
The complex provides instructional and administrative spaces and also medical and dental facilities, vocational shops with classrooms, and a gymnatorium that has a capacity of 300 seats with an integral stage. The complex includes a day care center, a cafetorium with full service kitchen including a culinary-arts kitchen and adjoining classroom, and a maintenance/warehouse building. The project also includes a full medical facility. Dormitory housing areas provide for male, female and single parent dormitories. Development of the 18.5 acre site included parking facilities for staff and visitors along with a full service yard with parking for government vehicles and buses. The recreational areas include football and soccer fields, softball fields, handball courts, as well as provisions for a future swimming pool facility.
